The architectural landscape of present-day Rome is a physical history lesson in the use spolia; ancient marble blocks lie embedded medieval fortresses, pieces aqueducts appear walls, and decorative columns sit recontextualized grand cathedrals. Spolia refers to intentional reuse materials or artifacts creation new structures, when examined critically it can reveal surrounding many lives have lived. During transitional phase between late antique early Christian Rome, spolia reached an all time high. emergence Christianity coupled with political economic decline empire created demand for large amounts cheap building material. With Gaulish invaders north, Romans found themselves dire need fortification.
